Entering the relationship on a consultative basis, the agency joined a team that was challenged to redefine the department's mission. The Managed Care group at Ethicon Endo - Surgery attempted to influence the behavior patterns of physicians and their approach to hysterectomies based on "better medicine." Operating as part of this team, the agency made recommendations to change the name of the department incorporating more emphasis on clinical outcomes as opposed to managed care, which primarily focuses on cost based outcomes and not necessarily improved clinical outcomes. The group was renamed "The Center for Clinical Decision Support" at Ethicon Endo - Surgery. Furthering this approach, the group developed materials that would help physicians understand and evaluate methods that would have more advantageous clinical outcomes for patients. The materials shown here were developed to provide information that physicians could use when choosing between abdominal and vaginal hysterectomies with or without laparoscopic assistance.
